Six members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have filed a ₦1 billion lawsuit against the Anambra State Government over alleged assault and unlawful detention by the state’s vigilante outfit, Agunechemba.

The plaintiffs — Jennifer Elohor, Greatness Oyeh, Eze Ikenna, Anighoro Godspower, Feyisara Amore, and Chimenum Wonodi — are seeking justice before the Federal High Court, Awka, after a viral video in August showed them being brutalised by armed vigilantes.

According to the suit, the victims were allegedly beaten, humiliated, and accused of being internet fraudsters (“Yahoo boys”) despite identifying themselves with their NYSC identity cards. One of the corps members, Elohor, was reportedly stripped naked during the assault.

Their counsel, Barr. Cyrus Onu, filed the case on their behalf, naming the Anambra State Government, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the State Attorney-General, and the Agunechemba Vigilante Group as the first to fourth respondents.

The corps members are demanding ₦1 billion in compensation for what they described as “severe mental, physical, emotional, and psychological trauma” resulting from the assault and detention.

In suit No. FHC/298/2025, they also seek a court declaration that their arrest, torture, and humiliation were unlawful, unconstitutional, and violated their fundamental human rights.

The plaintiffs further requested an order compelling the state government and other respondents to publish a written public apology in at least two national newspapers and one local newspaper in Anambra State.
