Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has approved a strict new law aimed at protecting government property from illegal occupation and misuse. Under the new law, anyone who forcefully enters or takes over government land or buildings risks a prison sentence of up to ten years.
The governor also signed another law that makes it an offence to sell, transfer, or dispose of any state-owned property without official approval. Anyone involved in such unauthorised transactions may face a five year jail term.

A statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, explained that the new legal framework is designed to end impunity and discourage corruption related to government assets. According to him, the administration will no longer tolerate the reckless handling of state-owned property.
The statement further noted that the law goes beyond arresting offenders; it also imposes penalties on professionals, such as surveyors, lawyers, or agents who help facilitate illegal land deals involving Edo State government property.
In a separate development, Governor Okpebholo announced that the state is preparing to restart the production of essential drugs by 2026. The plan is part of the national Renewed Hope Agenda and is expected to revive the abandoned Edo Pharmaceutical Company. During an inspection of the Central Medical Stores, the governor, represented by his deputy, Dennis Idahosa said the drug production initiative will reduce medical tourism and encourage investment in the state’s healthcare sector.

He recalled that facilities at the Edo Pharmaceutical Company were vandalised during the EndSARS protest in 2020, and assured that the state is now focused on rebuilding and reopening the facility for full operations. According to him, restarting drug production will boost local manufacturing and expand opportunities for private sector participation in Edo State.
