- German court sentences nurse to life imprisonment for 10 patients murder.
- Nurse killed patients with lethal drug injections to reduce workload.
- Investigation links him to murders and attempted murders across night shifts.
- Court ruled he showed no remorse, blocking eligibility for early release.
A regional court in Aachen, western Germany, delivered the ruling on Wednesday after finding that the 44-year-old nurse intentionally administered deadly injections to vulnerable patients under his care, about 10 in number. The murders occurred between December 2023 and May 2024 at a hospital in Wuerselen, near Aachen.
The court stated that the case carried a “particularly severe degree of guilt,” meaning the nurse will not qualify for early release after the usual 15-year minimum. Prosecutors argued that he acted with complete emotional detachment, treating human lives as an inconvenience during his night shifts.

According to investigators, the nurse injected high doses of sedatives and painkillers, including morphine and midazolam drugs typically reserved for deep sedation or controlled medical procedures. Prosecutors said he used them as a tool to eliminate patients so he could reduce his workload.
Witnesses and medical reports described his behaviour as cold and calculated, noting that he showed no sign of regret throughout the trial. Psychological evaluations presented to the court revealed that he suffers from a personality disorder and demonstrated no empathy toward the dying patients he was supposed to care for.

The nurse began working in healthcare in 2007 and had held positions in multiple facilities across Germany, including Cologne, before joining the Wuerselen hospital in 2020. Authorities eventually arrested him in mid-2024 after an unusual pattern of deaths triggered alarm and prompted a deeper investigation.
Prosecutors also revealed that several bodies were exhumed to determine whether more victims could be linked to him, suggesting that further charges may still emerge.
