U.S. President Donald Trump has escalated his warning to Nigeria, saying the United States may use force if Nigerian authorities do not act decisively to stop what he described as mass killings of Christians.

In a recorded address released on Wednesday, Trump said he had redesignated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged religious violence. He announced that U.S. aid could be suspended and that military options, including air strikes or troops on the ground are being prepared.

Trump did not mince words. He warned that the U.S. could take actions that “Nigerians are not going to be happy about,” adding that he had instructed the U.S. Department of War to make contingency plans. “We are going to do things to Nigerians that Nigeria is not going to be happy about,” he said, reiterating that any intervention would be serious and swift.

He framed the situation as an “existential threat” to Christianity in Nigeria, accusing radical Islamist groups of being responsible for widespread killings. Trump asked House members Riley Moore and Tom Cole to investigate and report back quickly, insisting the U.S. “cannot stand by” while such atrocities occur.

Trump also said the United States stands ready to defend Christian communities worldwide and argued that cutting aid or deploying military force may be necessary if the Nigerian government does not stop the violence.

As of this report, the Nigerian government had not issued an official response to Trump’s threats.
