Speaking with journalists after casting his vote, the former governor lamented that Nigeria’s democracy was deteriorating due to widespread electoral malpractice.
“Our democracy is deteriorating, and unfortunately, those who are benefiting from bad governance seem to be fueling it,” Obi said.

He condemned the trend of voters accepting money to sell their votes, saying such actions amount to selling their future.
“Someone who is not employed collects N30,000 for his vote — that means you have sold your school, your hospital, your job opportunities, and your future. That is what is very worrisome about our democracy,” he stated.
Mr Obi added that other West African countries have made progress in curbing vote buying, stressing that Nigeria must take decisive steps to stop the act.
“I have observed elections in neighbouring countries, and I haven’t seen something like this happening. This must stop,” he said.
While clarifying that he was not on the ballot, Obi reaffirmed his support for the Labour Party’s candidate, Dr George Moghalu, and extended goodwill to all the contestants.
“I’m not on the ballot, but I’m a member of Labour Party and I support my candidate, Dr George Moghalu. All the people contesting are my friends and I wish them well,” he added.
