Tension briefly erupted in Anambra after INEC declared Charles Soludo winner of the governorship election. Immediately after the announcement, policemen stationed at the governor’s country home in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area, were captured firing multiple gunshots into the air.

Soludo, running under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), won by a landslide, securing victory in all 21 local government areas of the state. His total votes stood at 422,664, placing him far ahead of Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who finished with 99,445 votes.

Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) followed with 37,753 votes, while John Nwosu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) garnered 8,208 votes.

Candidates of the Labour Party and Peoples Democratic Party also trailed behind, with George Moghalu scoring 10,576 votes and Jude Ezenwafor managing 1,401 votes respectively.

The declaration was made by Professor Omoregie Edoba, the Returning Officer and Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin.

Shortly after the announcement, videos surfaced online showing policemen firing their rifles into the air, allegedly in celebration of Soludo’s victory. The shots rang out inside the premises of the governor’s residence, drawing reactions from residents and online viewers. As of the time of filing this report, the police have not issued any official statement regarding the incident.

Soludo’s overwhelming win has been described by analysts as one of the most decisive victories in the state in recent years.
