Senegalese-American music star Akon has been arrested and detained in Georgia, United States, after failing to appear in court for a case linked to a suspended driver’s licence. The award-winning producer, whose real name is Aliaune Thiam, was held by Chamblee police officers for nearly six hours before being released on bail.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, the arrest stemmed from a bench warrant issued over Akon’s failure to appear in court in a case dating back to Roswell, New Mexico, where his licence had reportedly been suspended since January 2023.

In September, officers found Akon’s white Tesla Cybertruck stranded on a Georgia road after the car battery died. A routine check revealed that the vehicle lacked valid auto insurance and that Akon’s driving licence had already been suspended.

Police officer Joshua Rosa, who was at the scene, said Akon cooperated calmly during the arrest and admitted awareness of the pending court warrant. Rosa also noted that an illegal vape was found in the car’s center console and later destroyed by authorities.

The arrest reportedly followed a traffic camera alert identifying Akon’s Cybertruck as linked to an outstanding warrant. U.S. entertainment outlet TMZ confirmed that he was booked into the DeKalb County jail on November 7 and released on bail the same afternoon.
