- Lagos unveils E-Birth Registration to give newborns instant digital identity and NIN.
- Sanwo-Olu says the digital registration will improve planning in health, education, and social services.
- UNICEF and ALGON partner with NPC to replace manual records with a modern electronic birth system.
- System to operate across all LGAs, ensuring every child in Lagos receives legal identity from birth.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday unveiled the new electronic birth registration system for newborns in Lagos, explaining that the initiative would transform the way child records are captured and managed in the state. According to him, the system designed for children aged 0 to 12 months will automatically assign each child a National Identification Number, eliminating delays and errors common with manual records.
The governor said the system was introduced by the National Population Commission (NPC) in partnership with UNICEF and ALGON to upgrade the old method of documenting births. The project began in October and will run for six months before full integration across the state.

Sanwo-Olu noted that the programme would be active in every local government and local council development area, ensuring that no child in Lagos is excluded from birth documentation. He emphasised that early legal identity helps children access key services such as healthcare, education, and social support.
He explained that real-time data from the digital platform would assist the government in making better decisions, especially in maternal and child health, school enrolment planning, and community development. According to him, the initiative is a practical example of how technology can strengthen social inclusion and improve service delivery.
The governor also highlighted the alignment of the project with the United Nations SDG 16.9, which calls for legal identity for all. He praised the partnership between federal and state institutions, noting that such cooperation demonstrates a unified commitment to long-term national development.

Sanwo-Olu urged parents across Lagos to take advantage of the registration centres and ensure their children are enrolled. He also warned against fraudulent registration activities, stressing the importance of maintaining a clean and credible data system for the state.
Alongside the launch, the governor commissioned new infrastructure projects overseen by Muibi Alade Folawiyo. These include a modernised Secretariat at Zappas, a new legislative building, a 500-seater hall, dozens of administrative offices, and worship centres for the Christian and Muslim communities. Sanwo-Olu said the revamped Secretariat would serve as a stronger engine for governance, innovation, and state revenue.
