A total of 3,131 delegates were expected, while 2,745 were accredited for the voting exercise. Delegates from 17 states took part, underscoring the convention’s significance despite ongoing legal battles questioning its legitimacy.

In his acceptance speech, Turaki assured party members that the mandate entrusted to him would be treated with seriousness and respect. He emphasized that the PDP, despite years of political turbulence, has remained the only major party that has retained its original name because it was created for the Nigerian people.

He pledged to rebuild internal confidence, restore discipline, and bring back members who left due to past disagreements. “There will be no more impunity,” he declared, promising that the party would listen to Nigerians and respond to the needs of the moment. He said a fresh set of guiding principles would soon be released as part of a renewed push to reposition the PDP.

Turaki, 54, holds a law degree from the University of Jos and has accumulated more than 25 years of legal experience. He previously contested the governorship of Kebbi State and later served as a minister under President Goodluck Jonathan beginning in 2013.
