Obasanjo responds, returns money and calls Fayose unchanged and unchangeable, while urging genuine repentance
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo disclosed that he received an abusive “Thank You” message from ex-Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose following his attendance at Fayose’s 65th birthday celebration in Lagos last week.
The SMS, made public by Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, praised his attendance but sharply criticised the 89-year-old former president’s comments during the event.

Fayose described Obasanjo as “belonging in a zoo” and accused him of losing sanity, warning that he would set the records straight in due course. He also demanded that Obasanjo return the money sent to facilitate his attendance.
Obasanjo, in reply, confirmed that the money had been returned through Foluso Adeagbo, stating that Fayose’s message “undisguisedly revealed who and what you are, unchanged and unchangeable.”
At the birthday event, Obasanjo recounted past insults from Fayose, noting that despite seeking forgiveness multiple times, the former governor continued to display arrogance. He explained that Fayose did not personally invite him but sent intermediaries before visiting him directly.

Obasanjo urged Fayose to prioritise integrity, humility, and genuine repentance in his remaining life, stressing the need to learn from past mistakes.
He also recalled advising Fayose against certain government investments, highlighting their eventual failure.
