The Ondo State political landscape shifted sharply on Tuesday as hundreds of PDP members defected to the APC, with many citing President Bola Tinubu’s performance and ongoing road projects in Ondo as their major motivation.

The defectors, drawn from all 18 local government areas and mostly members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), said they could no longer cope with the internal problems in the PDP and decided to join the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

At the APC Secretariat in Akure, the state chairman, Ade Adetimehin, welcomed the new members warmly and urged them to immediately return to their wards and begin mobilising for President Tinubu’s re-election. He described the APC as a party with room for everyone and insisted that Ondo was solidly behind Tinubu.

Adetimehin said the surge in defections was a direct result of Tinubu’s impact on the state, noting that the president’s Renewed Hope projects and appointments had strengthened the APC.

The leader of the defectors, Ojo Adewole, speaking under the banner of the Asiwaju Transport Movement, said their movement to the APC was strongly influenced by the impressive work of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, whom he described as a dependable leader.

Adewole highlighted major road projects, such as the Benin–Ilesa highway dualisation, the Ore–Ondo–Akure road expansion, and ongoing repairs on the Akure–Ado Ekiti route, as key reasons transport workers were now aligning with the APC. He added that the continuation of projects inherited from former President Buhari showed that Tinubu was committed to developing Ondo.

He also praised the progress on the coastal highway, stressing that improved roads make daily transport operations easier for NURTW members, prompting their full support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
