Police confirm two killed, one injured in Kwara church attack

The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed that bandits launched a deadly attack on Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, killing at least two people and injuring one, before moving on to ambush travellers along the Ilorin–Kabba Road.

In its official statement, the police said the attack occurred around 6pm on Tuesday, with the suspects opening fire inside the church during a special service.

SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the state Police Public Relations Officer, said the Divisional Police Officer in Eruku led officers and vigilantes to the scene after gunshots were heard from the outskirts of the town.

“Police confirmed that a male victim, Mr. Aderemi, was fatally shot inside the church, while another, Mr. Tunde Asaba Ajayi, was found dead in the bush,” the statement said.

A vigilante member, Segun Alaja, also sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to ECWA Hospital, Eruku.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, commended the joint response of security operatives, vowing that the command would “not relent until these hoodlums are totally decimated.”

Witnesses recount horror inside the church

Earlier reports indicated that the bandits opened fire immediately after entering the church, killing three worshippers on the spot before abducting the pastor and several congregants.

An eyewitness said the attackers moved with precision:

“They came into the church while people were gathered. They started shooting and three people died immediately. They later rounded up some worshippers, including the pastor, and marched them into the bush.”he said.
