The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of one of its officers who was attacked while on duty in the Imota axis of Ikorodu, Lagos. The incident, which occurred around 4:00 pm on November 16, 2025, happened as the soldier tried to resolve a tense situation involving a mentally unstable man.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by Musa Yahaya, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 81 Division, the soldier stepped in to de-escalate confusion in the area when the attacker suddenly struck him on the head with a heavy wooden log. The blow caused severe injuries, leaving him unconscious.

Soldiers who were on duty with him quickly intervened, bringing the situation under control. The attacker was neutralised, and the soldier’s rifle, momentarily exposed during the chaos was immediately secured.
The wounded officer was rushed to Ikorodu General Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite efforts by medical personnel, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Yahaya stated that the late soldier was buried according to Islamic rites in a ceremony attended by his commanding officers. The division described him as a committed officer who lost his life in the line of duty.

The Nigerian Army expressed heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and loved ones. It added that a formal investigation is underway to determine all circumstances surrounding the attack. Residents were urged to remain vigilant and promptly report unusual behaviour or disturbances to security agencies.
The 81 Division affirmed that the soldier’s death is a painful loss and prayed for the repose of his soul.
