  • The court held that Nnamdi Kanu’s terrorism convictions warranted life imprisonment instead of a death sentence.
  • Justice Omotosho also issued additional prison terms of 20 years and five years on other counts, to run concurrently.
  • The ruling underscores Nigeria’s stance on IPOB activities and the government’s broader anti-terrorism efforts.
  • The judgment immediately triggered strong national reactions as Kanu begins his life sentence.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of terrorism-related offences.

Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the case, ruled that Kanu would serve life imprisonment on counts one, four, five, and six. The judge explained that although the charges could attract a death sentence, the court opted for life imprisonment.

“In view of the gravity of the offences and the evidence before this court, I hereby sentence the convict to life imprisonment for counts one, four, five, and six,” Omotosho said. “For Count Three, he is sentenced to 20 years without an option of fine. For Count Seven, he is sentenced to five years. The sentences shall run concurrently.”

The judgment caps years of legal battles, arrests, and controversies surrounding Nnamdi Kanu and the activities of IPOB, which the Nigerian government has designated as a terrorist organisation.

More reactions are expected as the ruling continues to send shockwaves through political, legal, and regional circles.
