President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate withdrawal of police officers attached to Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country. The officers are to be redeployed to core policing duties to improve national security.
The directive was announced in a statement by the President’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, following a high-level security meeting Tinubu held on Sunday with service chiefs and the Director-General of the Department of State Services in Abuja.

According to the statement, VIPs who still require official protection will now request armed security personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), not the police.

Tinubu said the decision became necessary as many communities, especially in remote areas, suffer from low police presence, making it difficult to protect citizens effectively.
The President also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers as part of government efforts to strengthen security nationwide. He added that the federal government is collaborating with state governments to upgrade police training facilities.
Those in attendance at the closed-door meeting included Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and Director-General of the DSS, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
