  • Party questions his “inconsistency” on national security issues.
  • Lagos APC says Obi’s comments are desperate attempts to stay relevant.
  • Party insists national security cannot bend to ethnic or political sentiment.

The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress said Obi’s comments on the life sentence handed to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu were nothing short of political opportunism. In a statement signed by its spokesman, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, the party accused Obi of trying to score cheap points by describing Kanu’s arrest, detention and sentencing as “unfortunate.”

According to the APC, Obi has consistently avoided condemning IPOB’s violent activities while pretending to speak for national unity. The party argued that his position exposed what it called a deliberate double standard—condemning Boko Haram loudly but shielding IPOB under the guise of fairness.

The statement urged Obi to stop masking ethnic sentiments as national concern, insisting that his reactions were driven by personal ambition rather than genuine principles. It added that his sudden interest in IPOB’s legal battles was a tactic to stay politically relevant ahead of future elections.

The APC insisted that matters involving treason and terrorism fall strictly within constitutional authority and that national security cannot be compromised because of political pressures. It called on Nigerians to disregard Obi’s remarks, describing them as an emotional attempt to revive what it termed a failed political project.

The party accused Obi of playing to a regional gallery and attempting to “audition for 2027” with comments designed to stir sympathy. It questioned why he appeared to defend IPOB while criticizing other extremist groups, calling it a glaring display of bias.

The statement concluded with a warning that Nigeria’s sovereignty would not be negotiated to please “sentimental politicians,” stressing that the country’s security framework would continue to respond firmly to acts deemed a threat to national stability.
