Controversial Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has urged Nigerians to exercise patience over the country’s security challenges, saying no government anywhere in the world can completely eradicate terrorism.

Reacting to recent abductions in Kwara State and other parts of the country, Gumi argued that it was unrealistic for citizens to expect a total end to insecurity, noting that even advanced nations continued to struggle with various threats.

“No government can completely eliminate terrorism. Even countries like the United States still contend with their own security challenges,” he said.

Despite public outrage over recurring attacks and kidnappings, the cleric maintained that the security situation was showing signs of improvement, urging citizens to acknowledge ongoing progress instead of focusing solely on setbacks.

He added that efforts by the military were yielding results, stressing that “Nigerians should be patient and avoid panic.”

Gumi further warned that certain “foreigners” were allegedly attempting to exploit Christianity to create distrust among citizens, claiming that external actors were trying to sow division along religious lines.

“Some foreigners are trying to use Christianity to create divisions among Nigerians. We must not allow this. Nigeria’s religious communities have coexisted peacefully for generations,” he said.

His comments come amid heightened concern over rising abductions and terrorist attacks in several states, which have reignited debates about the government’s handling of national security and the effectiveness of ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
