Two police officers in Adamawa have been taken into custody after being accused of unprofessional conduct at a checkpoint in Jimeta, where one of them reportedly fired at the tyre of a vehicle during a routine stop, sparking concerns about police misconduct and excessive force.

The Adamawa State Police Command confirmed the arrest, explaining that the officers, both attached to the Jimeta Divisional Police Headquarters had stopped a Mercedes Benz 180 near River Side for a routine check when the situation escalated.

According to the command, the occupants of the car allegedly resisted the search, prompting one of the officers to discharge his weapon at the vehicle’s tyres. Authorities described the action as “unnecessary, improper, and contrary to police disciplinary standards.”

No injuries were recorded, but the Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, immediately ordered a full-scale investigation.

In a statement issued through the command’s spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje, the CP stressed that the Nigeria Police will not tolerate acts that undermine professionalism or endanger civilians.

Nguroje quoted the Commissioner as saying the command “will enforce appropriate disciplinary measures while upholding professionalism, discipline, and respect for citizens’ rights.”

As of the time of reporting, the two officers remain in custody pending the conclusion of the inquiry.
