The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Federal Government over the recent shutdown of schools in response to rising insecurity, describing the measure as evidence that the authorities can no longer safeguard citizens.

Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said closing schools because of bandit attacks sends a disturbing message about the government’s declining capacity to secure learning environments.

According to him, the decision indirectly strengthens the ideology of Boko Haram, whose mission has been to undermine Western education.

“When you shut down schools out of fear that bandits may kidnap children, what you’re saying is that you can no longer protect those schools,” Abdullahi said.
“And let’s not forget that Boko Haram’s ideology is that Western education is forbidden. By closing these schools, you are unknowingly reinforcing that ideology.”

Abdullahi further asserted that President Bola Tinubu’s recent moves on security were triggered by pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, following recent criticisms from Washington.

He also dismissed claims that the ADC was involved in encouraging insecurity or lobbying the U.S. government against Nigeria.

The ADC’s reaction comes after the release of schoolgirls abducted on November 17 during an attack that also claimed the life of the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku.

President Tinubu had, on Wednesday, declared a nationwide security emergency in response to growing public fear and escalating attacks across the country.
