Ngige, who last served as Nigeria’s Minister of Labour, narrowly escaped the assault as he was not in the convoy at the time of the attack.

The incident occurred along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area, where the attackers opened fire on the former governor’s lead vehicle, leading to an exchange of gunfire between them and security operatives in the convoy.

According to eyewitnesses, a police officer and a shop owner were also injured.

The civilian victim reportedly lost a substantial amount of blood and is scheduled for surgery to remove bullets, though doctors say he is expected to recover fully.

In a statement, Ngige’s media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe, confirmed the attack and clarified that the assailants, dressed in police and army uniforms, targeted the pilot vehicle, shooting and injuring the lead escort. The attackers also made away with the policeman’s gun and uniform.

“The pilot car was riddled with bullets,” the statement added.

Ngige, who spoke through his aide, commiserated with the family of the woman killed while filming the attack and assured that he is monitoring the treatment of the injured officer and civilian.

Ngige’s camp dismissed reports that a police officer was killed in the incident.

The Anambra State Police Command also confirmed the attack, saying the bullet-riddled pilot vehicle had been recovered. The Command, however, noted that no officer was killed.
