President Donald Trump announced on Friday his plan to place a permanent ban on Nigerians and other immigrants from the Global South from entering the United States.
The move, he said, is necessary to allow the U.S. immigration system to fully recover and to remove individuals deemed “non-contributors” to the nation.

Trump stated that millions of previous admissions under the Biden administration were “illegal” and promised to denaturalise and deport migrants considered security risks or public charges, while ending all federal benefits to noncitizens.

He claimed the U.S. foreign population, currently around 53 million, has placed a heavy burden on American taxpayers and contributed to social dysfunction, including crime, urban decay, and strained public services.
The president described the refugee and immigrant influx as a leading factor in societal problems, arguing that previous waves of migration, unlike post-World War II periods, have caused “division, disruption, and insecurity” across the country.
Trump’s announcement came days after two National Guardsmen were shot near the White House in Washington, D.C., an attack he cited as justification for the stricter immigration measures.
