Commuters on the Numan-Yola road in Adamawa State were thrown into confusion after a trailer transporting hundreds of bags of rice burst into flames. The incident happened near the Numan axis and quickly caused a massive traffic gridlock in the area.

Witnesses said movement along the road came to a standstill for nearly two hours as smoke and fire engulfed the trailer. The Numan-Yola route is the major highway connecting most parts of Adamawa to the rest of the country, making the blockage a serious disruption for motorists and traders.

One of the witnesses, Adamu Bappa, who was among those who rushed to put out the flames, said villagers had to act fast to offload the rice while the vehicle was still burning.

“We used several minutes and a lot of effort to remove the rice. The smoke was very heavy,” Bappa said.

He added that around 400 bags of rice were successfully recovered from the estimated 500 bags the trailer was carrying before the fire could spread further.

According to residents who joined the rescue effort, the quick response of villagers helped prevent the fire from consuming the entire load.
