Sabinus Reveals How His Father Initially Rejected His Comedy Career

Comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, has shared how his father initially opposed his decision to pursue comedy, insisting he should become a lawyer instead. Speaking with VJ Adams, Sabinus recounted the challenges he faced before finding his passion in skit-making during his university years.

In an interview, Sabinus opened up about the challenges he faced in pursuing comedy, particularly the resistance from his father. He explained that his father had always envisioned him becoming a lawyer.

“At first, my dad never wanted me to be what I am today; he wanted me to be a lawyer. I tried my best but couldn’t secure admission. So, I settled for Linguistics and Communication Studies at Uniport,” Sabinus said.

He revealed that his comedic journey began on campus when he tried creating skits, even though the financial rewards were minimal. After graduating, he initially hid his career from his father. It was only a year later, when his father saw him featured on comedy show posters and confirmed by Sabinus’s sisters, that he realized his son had become a comedian.

Sabinus recounted his father’s reaction: “He was very furious. He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.’”

Despite the initial opposition, Sabinus has continued to grow in the comedy industry, earning acclaim and building a loyal fanbase across Nigeria and beyond.
