Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has stepped down from office with immediate effect, citing health challenges as the reason for his resignation.
Badaru, 63, tendered his resignation in a letter dated December 1, 2025, addressed to President Bola Tinubu. The president has accepted the decision and expressed appreciation for the former governor’s service to the nation.

Badaru, a two-term former governor of Jigawa State (2015–2023), was appointed Defence Minister on 21 August 2023 by President Tinubu.
His resignation comes at a sensitive moment, arriving just days after President Tinubu declared a national security emergency, with more details expected in the coming days.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed that President Tinubu would likely transmit the name of Badaru’s replacement to the Senate later this week.
The presidency praised Badaru’s commitment while in office and wished him well as he steps aside to attend to his health.
