Peter Obi has strongly criticised the recently released ambassadorial list forwarded to the Senate by President Bola Tinubu, saying that several names on the list fall short of the standards required to represent Nigeria abroad.

“Some of the names being paraded to represent us as ambassadors globally are shocking. But with a leadership that has allowed mediocrity, corruption, and impunity to rise to the top, who else did you expect them to choose?” he said.

Obi argued that such decisions deepen the distrust between government and citizens, and worsen the gap between leaders and the ordinary Nigerian. He also faulted First Lady Remi Tinubu over what he described as unnecessary displays of luxury at a time the country is dealing with insecurity, kidnappings, and violence.

“Our institutions are being ridiculed, the First Lady hosting extravagant dinners for Senators while children are being abducted, and the countless killings across the country,” he stated.

According to him, leadership should be measured by responsibility, empathy, and competence, not by flamboyance or political reward. He maintained that Nigeria’s problems are rooted in failed leadership choices, not a lack of human capacity.

Obi also sent a message to the youth, urging them to stay engaged and push for a transformed nation.

He insisted that a fair and secure country is still attainable, but only if Nigerians refuse to accept bad governance as the country’s destiny.

Last week, President Tinubu forwarded a list of 32 nominees to the Senate. The names include former presidential aide Reno Omokri, former INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, former Lagos Deputy Governor Femi Pedro, former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode, and several other non-career and political appointees.

The Presidency noted that the ambassadors will be posted to strategic countries such as China, India, Canada, South Korea, the UAE, Mexico, Qatar, South Africa, and missions like the United Nations and the African Union.

Earlier, Tinubu had sent three nominees in the first batch; Ayodele Oke, Amin Mohammed Dalhatu, and Colonel Lateef Kayode Are (rtd).

Obi insists the nominations offer little hope for improvement, saying Nigeria deserves better leadership representation on the global stage.
