Youth leaders cite Omokri’s past statements against Tinubu as grounds for rejection
The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has urged the National Assembly to reject the nomination of Reno Omokri as an ambassador, describing his selection as unfit and potentially damaging to Nigeria’s image abroad.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, OYC National President, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, said Omokri’s nomination amounts to a “national embarrassment,” arguing that he lacks the integrity, composure and diplomatic temperament required for such a sensitive role.

He accused the nominee of consistently engaging in reckless public commentary, saying Omokri’s history of controversial statements should automatically disqualify him from representing the country on the international stage.
“Reno Omokri is a well-known blatherskite, a gasbag and a whiffler who has disgraced himself in Nigeria’s political landscape to satisfy his paymasters,” Igboayaka said.
The youth leader warned that confirming Omokri would expose Nigeria to ridicule, especially given his past allegations against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He referenced a December 17, 2022 statement in which Omokri urged Nigerians to obtain samples of Tinubu’s hair and urine for drug testing and accused the president of being a “drug lord who belongs in jail, not Aso Rock.”
According to Igboayaka, endorsing Omokri as an ambassador would inadvertently elevate those allegations to the level of official government statements.

“If he is allowed to represent Nigeria, his past comments can be cited internationally as verified facts from a constituted authority,” he said.
He argued that such a development would amount to an “implied endorsement” of Omokri’s past attacks, warning that it could damage Nigeria’s diplomatic reputation and trigger unnecessary international scrutiny. “Reno Omokri lacks the character, quality, integrity, speech composition and disposition required of an ambassador,” he added.
The OYC called on lawmakers to reject the nomination in order to protect Nigeria from diplomatic embarrassment and prevent undue criticism of the president.
Omokri is among the 32 individuals President Tinubu forwarded to the Senate for ambassadorial confirmation.
