In a judgment seen as a boost for traditional religion and cultural identity, an Uyo High Court has ordered the release and compensation of an Ekpo masquerade practitioner unlawfully arrested during the Yuletide season in Akwa Ibom.

The performer, identified as Mr. Effiong, was apprehended after state authorities reportedly placed restrictions on public masquerade displays. His arrest sparked outrage among custodians of indigenous worship, who argued that the directive undermined age-long spiritual traditions.

The court, after reviewing evidence, held that the arrest breached his fundamental rights, including freedom of religion and personal liberty since Ekpo masquerade practice is both legally recognised and constitutionally protected in Akwa Ibom.

“Ekpo is a traditional worship form recognised under Nigerian law, and its adherents are entitled to full constitutional protection,” the judge affirmed.

With the ruling, the court ordered his immediate release and directed the state government to compensate him for the violation of his rights.

The decision has drawn applause from human rights advocates who describe it as a landmark victory for indigenous faith systems. Traditional institutions also celebrated the judgment, saying it reinforces the need to respect Nigeria’s cultural diversity rather than suppress it.
