The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has suspended the traditional priest of Unuamen Village in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Sunday Enoma, over alleged violations of established customs and traditions of the Benin Kingdom.

The suspension was announced in a statement issued on Saturday and signed by the monarch’s Chief Press Secretary, Osaigbovo Iguobaro.

According to the statement, Enoma was removed from his position as the Ohen-Ovia of Unuamen for actions deemed contrary to the sacred norms guiding the kingdom’s traditional institutions.

The Oba reaffirmed Kingsley Igbinosa as the legitimate Okao (traditional head) of Unuamen Village, dismissing the suspended priest’s claim that he was responsible for installing the village head.

He described the claim as “baseless, unfounded, and abominable,” stressing that the authority to confer or install any chieftaincy title in the Benin Kingdom rests exclusively with the Oba.

The palace reiterated that attempts to usurp or distort the chieftaincy processes violate long-standing customs and will attract appropriate sanctions.
