- Two killed, two badly injured in separate Lagos road crashes
- First collision happened at midnight on Otedola Bridge
- Second crash occurred on Third Mainland Bridge near UNILAG
- LASTMA warns motorists to obey speed limits and drive with caution
Two tragic accidents hours apart shook Lagos on Monday, leaving two dead at the scene and two more fighting for their lives. Authorities say that both incidents were avoidable, and once again, speeding has been named as a major culprit.
According to LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the first crash took place around 2:30 a.m. at Otedola Bridge, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway heading toward Berger.

Early findings show that an unregistered vehicle with two occupants crashed into a trailer loaded with goods. The impact was massive and neither the driver nor the passenger survived. The trailer driver reportedly disappeared from the scene almost immediately.

“These deaths are wholly preventable. Reckless speeding continues to take lives that should not be lost,” Bakare-Oki stated, stressing the need for drivers to slow down.
LASTMA’s Night-Gang response team arrived within minutes, clearing the vehicle remains and removing the bodies to avoid secondary accidents. Officers from Isheri Police Division and officials of SHEMU handled recovery and documentation as required by emergency procedure.
The second crash happened just before dawn roughly 5:00 a.m. near the UNILAG waterfront on Third Mainland Bridge, heading toward Lagos Island.
An empty tanker rammed into a pure-water delivery van (SMK 67 XH), leaving two people in critical condition. They were stabilised at the scene by LASAMBUS paramedics before being transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Despite the severity of both incidents, LASTMA maintains that its officers sustained traffic control on both routes to prevent wider disruption and ensure road safety for morning commuters.
Bakare-Oki expressed sympathy to the affected families and reiterated that LASTMA warns motorists regularly, yet many continue to ignore speed limit enforcement, putting themselves and others at risk. He praised the dedication of LASTMA’s surveillance teams and reaffirmed that round-the-clock monitoring will continue in line with Lagos State’s push for safer roads and reduced fatalities.
