The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has detained former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, after he failed to meet the bail conditions issued to him during an ongoing investigation into multiple alleged financial offences.

According to the source, the agency is probing Malami over 18 different allegations, including money laundering, abuse of office, terrorism financing, and the handling of recovered funds linked to late Head of State Sani Abacha, particularly those returned from Switzerland and the Island of Jersey.

“We detained him over terrorism financing and the whereabouts of recovered Abacha loot. He has not met his bail conditions, and he will remain with us until he does,” the source said, adding that investigators continue to uncover fresh details during the probe.

The former justice minister has been directed to report daily to the EFCC throughout December as part of the ongoing interrogation process.

Malami, however, dismissed the allegations as fabricated, insisting that his record as AGF contradicts any insinuation of wrongdoing.

“For the avoidance of doubt, my public record stands in direct contradiction to claims of terrorism financing. During my tenure, I worked to strengthen Nigeria’s legal framework against money laundering and terrorist financing,” he said.
