The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has firmly denied claims by former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, that his bail was revoked because of his attendance at a political gathering in Kebbi State.

In a statement issued on Saturday, EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said the allegation was untrue, stressing that Malami’s continued detention is strictly due to his failure to satisfy the conditions attached to the provisional administrative bail granted to him.

According to the Commission, the matter has no political undertone and is unrelated to Malami’s media engagements or political movements. Instead, the EFCC said it is purely an issue of non-compliance with bail requirements.

Oyewale described narratives circulating in the public space as misleading, adding that the agency was compelled to clarify the situation despite its usual reluctance to engage media debates over its operations.

He explained that administrative bail is not a right but a discretionary and temporary relief given to suspects while investigations are ongoing and before possible arraignment in court.

The EFCC disclosed that Malami was granted provisional administrative bail following a brief interrogation on November 28, 2025, under five clearly stated conditions. However, the Commission noted that none of these conditions has been fulfilled.

The agency maintained that until the bail terms are met, Malami remains lawfully in custody, reiterating that the case has no connection with politics or any attempt to suppress political activity.
