President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a man who deeply loved Nigeria and lived a life of integrity, discipline and selfless service. Tinubu said Buhari’s legacy would continue to inspire generations long after his time in office, noting that true leadership is measured by values, not power.

The President spoke on Monday at the official presentation of the book From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

Speaking as the Guest of Honour, Tinubu said Buhari would be remembered not for the privileges of office, but for the principles he upheld even after leaving power.

“The measure of a leader is not the offices he held or the motorcades that followed him. It is what remains when the sirens fall silent,” Tinubu said.

According to the President, Buhari lived modestly and treated public office as a sacred trust rather than a reward.

Tinubu extended the nation’s condolences to the Buhari family, assuring them of Nigeria’s gratitude and prayers for the late leader’s years of service.

Reflecting on their shared political journey, the President recalled the historic 2015 election that ended an incumbent government, describing it as a turning point in Nigeria’s democracy.

“Our movement united diverse interests and reshaped Nigeria’s political landscape,” he said.

He highlighted Buhari’s legacy in key areas including security, infrastructure development, social welfare and discipline in governance.

“President Buhari believed a leader must first discipline himself before he can discipline a system,” Tinubu noted.

On national development, Tinubu said Buhari focused on long-term projects such as railways, roads, bridges and airport upgrades, while ensuring sustainability.

He also praised Buhari’s commitment to social welfare, saying the former president believed government must protect the poor and vulnerable through targeted interventions.

Calling on Nigerians to continue Buhari’s work, Tinubu said legacy only endures when successors build on it.

“President Buhari loved this country decision after decision, morning after morning. Even those who disagreed with him acknowledged his honesty,” he said.

The book was reviewed by Dr Charles Omole, who described it as a balanced account of Buhari’s life, achievements and shortcomings, offering lessons for future leaders on integrity and responsibility.

Buhari died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in London after a prolonged illness. He was buried in Daura, Katsina State, in a state funeral attended by national and regional leaders.
