The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Rita Ughale, a resident of Kokori community in Ethiope East Local Government Area, over her alleged involvement in the sale of her two-month-old baby boy.Police said the child was sold to a couple identified as Osas Omijie (39) and Judith Omijie (30) for the sum of ₦1.5 million.

According to Edafe, the woman had reported at the Ekpan Police Division on December 15, 2025, claiming that her baby was snatched from her while she was travelling in a tricycle.

“Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Labe Joseph, immediately mobilised operatives for a search and rescue operation,” Edafe said.

However, police investigators noticed inconsistencies in her account during interrogation.

“Further questioning revealed that the robbery story was staged. The complainant later confessed that she sold her two-month-old baby to a couple for ₦1.5 million,” the police spokesman stated.

Following the confession, officers arrested both the woman and the alleged buyers, while the baby was successfully traced and rescued.

SP Edafe confirmed that the infant is safe and currently under protective care, adding that investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other possible accomplices.

The police also referenced a similar incident in May 2025, when five suspects were arrested in Lagos for allegedly selling a two-week-old baby for ₦3 million, noting a disturbing trend of child trafficking cases across the country.
