APC NEC meeting stresses party growth, e-membership registration, and upcoming elections
President Bola Tinubu has issued a stern warning to state governors, stating that he could invoke an Executive Order to ensure direct allocation of funds to local governments if states continue defying the Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 local councils.
Delivering the message at the 15th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja, Tinubu expressed concern that some governors still withhold statutory allocations, despite the July 11, 2024 Supreme Court judgment which declared state interference in local government finances unconstitutional.

“The Supreme Court has capped it for you again, saying, ‘give them their money directly,’” Tinubu said. “If you wait for my Executive Order, because I have the knife, I have the yam, I will cut it.”
He emphasized that compliance with the court ruling is non-negotiable and persistent violations could trigger federal intervention.
The NEC meeting, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Assembly leaders, APC governors, and party officials, also highlighted the party’s growth and organisational consolidation. APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda noted that defections from opposition parties, along with structured mobilisation campaigns and e-membership registration, have strengthened APC’s national footprint ahead of future elections.
The session concluded with motions endorsing President Tinubu for a second term, advancing the e-membership registration system, and reinforcing the party’s commitment to national unity, party expansion, and election preparedness.
Key attendees included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas, and six newly defected governors from the PDP.
