- Nnamdi Kanu abducted on day of traditional marriage
- Wife blames internal betrayal within pro-Biafra movement
- Abduction happened in public, in front of family
- Incident still shapes Kanu’s struggle, wife says
Uchechigeme Anyanwụụtụtụ Okwu-Kanu, wife of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, has recounted the painful circumstances surrounding Nnamdi Kanu’s abduction, describing it as one of the darkest moments of their lives.
In a social media post shared on Thursday, she said the incident occurred on December 19, 2009, the same day their traditional marriage ceremony was scheduled to take place.

According to her, Kanu was abducted in broad daylight at their family compound by men she alleged were loyal to Ralph Uwazuruike, leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).
She accused Uwazuruike of betraying her husband, saying the arrest was carried out publicly and left lasting emotional scars on their family.

“My husband was taken right in front of our family square on the day we were meant to be joined as husband and wife,” she wrote.
Okwu-Kanu claimed that during the abduction, her husband was assaulted, beaten, and humiliated, describing the ordeal as deeply traumatic.
She insisted that Kanu’s only “crime” was opposing what she termed the commercial exploitation of the Igbo struggle, including the production of so-called Biafran passports, vehicle number plates, and plans to introduce a currency for profit.
Reflecting on the years of hardship that followed, she said both of them had endured immense personal sacrifices in what she described as a fight for the restoration and transformation of their people.
“There are battles in which the only weapon you possess is time,” she wrote.
“And in a little while, Nnamdi Kanu will be free.”
