“The vehicle forcefully rammed into the unsuspecting LAWMA sweeper who was carrying out routine roadside cleaning. The severe impact, particularly to the head region, proved instantly fatal,” the statement read.
LASTMA officers on routine traffic surveillance were said to have swiftly responded after receiving distress alerts. The driver reportedly fled the scene in an attempt to escape justice but was chased, apprehended, and returned to the crash site by officers.
According to the agency, the prompt arrest prevented a breakdown of law and order, as angry residents nearly subjected the suspect to mob action.

The driver and the vehicle were later handed over to officers of the Meiran Police Division for investigation and prosecution in line with existing laws.
Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased were evacuated by LAWMA officials using an official vehicle for further procedures.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the death as painful and avoidable.
“This loss is both distressing and preventable. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the fallen LAWMA operative,” he said.
Bakare-Oki condemned the act of reversing on an expressway, calling it a serious violation of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, and warned motorists against reckless driving that continues to claim innocent lives.
He also commended LASTMA officers for their courage and swift response in ensuring the suspect did not escape accountability.
The incident adds to a worrying trend in Lagos, where road sweepers have repeatedly been knocked down by careless drivers, sparking public demands for better safety measures for environmental workers on busy roads.
