The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared December 25 and 26, 2025, as well as January 1, 2026, as public holidays to celebrate Christmas, Boxing Day, and the New Year, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Interior.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

She disclosed that the declaration was made on behalf of the Federal Government by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
According to the statement, the minister encouraged Nigerians to reflect on the core values of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice, which are strongly linked to the celebration of Christmas and the birth of Jesus Christ.
“The festive season should remind us of the importance of love, peace, and selflessness in building a better nation,” the minister said.

Tunji-Ojo also called on Nigerians, irrespective of religion, tribe, or background, to use the holiday period to pray for peace, improved security, and national progress.
He further urged citizens to remain law-abiding and security-conscious throughout the celebrations.
The minister ended the message by wishing Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, while assuring that the government remains committed to the safety and wellbeing of all citizens.
