The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has renewed its call for the impeachment of President Bola Tinubu should investigations establish that he played a role in the alleged alteration of Nigeria’s tax laws after their passage by the National Assembly.

The party described the controversy as a serious constitutional issue, warning that any executive interference with duly passed legislation represents a grave threat to democratic governance and the separation of powers.

The development follows the decision of the House of Representatives to set up a seven-member ad-hoc committee to probe reported discrepancies between tax bills approved by lawmakers and the versions later gazetted.

The matter was raised on the floor of the House by Abdulsammad Dasuki, a lawmaker from Sokoto State, who alleged that the documents officially published did not reflect what legislators debated and passed.

Reacting in a statement signed by its National Chairman, Falalu Bello, the PRP said the allegations suggest that parts of the laws may have been altered without legislative approval, describing such actions as unconstitutional and dangerous.

According to the party, altering laws after passage undermines due process, weakens legislative authority and erodes public trust in governance.

The PRP warned that if credible evidence links President Tinubu to the alleged manipulation, constitutional provisions must be invoked without hesitation.

“No individual, including the President, is above the law. If investigations establish culpability at the highest level, impeachment must follow,” the party stated.

It also demanded the immediate suspension of the implementation of the disputed tax laws until all inconsistencies between the versions passed by lawmakers and those gazetted are fully examined and resolved.

The party further disclosed that it may seek judicial intervention if corrective action is not taken promptly, noting that enforcing disputed laws could worsen governance tensions and economic uncertainty.

Emphasising the need to protect democratic institutions, the PRP called on civil society groups, lawmakers and Nigerians to resist what it described as executive overreach and insist on accountability.
