A tragic road accident involving a petrol tanker and the convoy of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has claimed the life of a police dispatch rider, identified as Ibrahim Hussaini.
The incident occurred on Sunday in Ibadan, Oyo State, shortly after Akpabio’s convoy picked him up from the airport while attending the installation ceremony of a colleague.

Akpabio disclosed the development on Tuesday during plenary, where he formally informed fellow senators of the loss and expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased officer.

According to the Senate President, the dispatch rider, a police officer assigned to his security detail, was run over by a fuel tanker, sustaining fatal injuries.
“We went to Oyo State for the installation of our colleague. Unfortunately, my dispatch rider was run over by a tanker driver, and his head was shattered. We just buried him 15 minutes ago in Kogi State. He left two wives and four children,” Akpabio said.
He added that the late officer had already been buried in Kogi State earlier on Tuesday.
Akpabio further announced plans to support the bereaved family, pledging to recommend two of the deceased’s senior children for immediate employment in government parastatals or personally engage them through his private businesses if necessary.
Following the announcement, Senator Sunday Karimi (Kogi West) raised a motion on personal explanation to officially bring the matter before the Senate.
Karimi revealed that Hussaini was a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) who was due for retirement next year and had been part of Akpabio’s security detail since 2023, when he became Senate President.
The Senate was also informed of another loss involving Ibrahim Tukur, a long-serving driver attached to Senator Isah Jibrin (Kogi East), who reportedly died at his residence on Saturday after 25 years of service.
Addressing the chamber, Jibrin said Tukur had worked with him since his early banking career and offered prayers for his soul.
The plenary session ended with Senate President Akpabio leading lawmakers in a minute of silence in honour of the two deceased staff members.
