The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has traced 41 properties worth over N212 billion to Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. The assets, which include hotels, schools, houses, factories and lands, are located in Kebbi State, Kano State and Abuja, according to court documents filed by the federal government.

According to reports by TheCable, the EFCC investigation revealed that the properties were mostly acquired between 2015 and 2023, the period Malami served under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The commission disclosed that properties located in Kebbi State are valued at about N162.1 billion, those in Kano State at N16 billion, while assets in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are estimated at N34.6 billion. As

The properties allegedly linked to Malami include universities, hotels, residential buildings, schools, factories, fuel facilities, radio stations, and luxury homes.

The federal government has also filed a 16-count charge against Malami and his son, Abdulaziz Malami, over alleged offences bordering on money laundering.

A source familiar with the case said the charges are based on provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, specifically Sections 15, 18 and 21.

“The scale of assets traced to the former minister is massive and spread across strategic locations,” the source said.

In Kebbi State, the EFCC listed multiple educational institutions under the Rayhaan brand, hotels, factories, oil and gas facilities, private residences, and commercial buildings.

In Kano State, properties include luxury hotels, a mosque, a gym facility and private residences.

In Abuja, the assets feature high-end hotels in Maitama and Jabi, duplexes, and several housing units in Efab Estate and Garki.

The total estimated value of all properties stands at N212.8 billion.

The case is expected to proceed in court as Nigerians watch closely to see whether the EFCC will secure a conviction or if the matter will follow the path of previous high-profile corruption cases.
