A retired Nigerian military officer, Captain Abdullahi Bakoji, has described the reported United States military strikes against insurgents as understandable, but cautioned that they could become dangerous if not properly aligned with Nigeria’s security framework.

Bakoji, who is also the Kano State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, told newsmen that although foreign military support may be aimed at weakening armed groups, lack of coordination with Nigerian security agencies could worsen the security situation.

According to him, operations carried out without adequate local collaboration could expose civilians to harm and shift violence to new areas.

“The intention to weaken insurgents is understandable,” he said. “However, such operations carry serious risks if they are not fully coordinated with Nigerian security forces.”

He warned that uncoordinated military actions could undermine local governance, damage trust between communities and government, and force insurgents to relocate rather than neutralise them.

Bakoji emphasised that for any foreign-backed security operation to succeed, there must be close cooperation with Nigerian authorities, with civilian protection placed at the centre of all strategies.

While acknowledging that external assistance can provide short-term relief, he stressed that Nigeria must prioritise strengthening its own security institutions.

He added that sustainable peace would only be achieved through effective governance, strong domestic security systems and active engagement with local communities, rather than reliance on foreign military interventions alone.
