Nigeria is mourning the loss of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, as the Nigerian senator died at 52 in India after battling a prolonged illness. Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, according to family sources.
A family member confirmed the death to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Nassarawa Eggon, stating that the lawmaker died while receiving treatment at a hospital in India.

Describing his passing as a huge blow to the state, the source said Senator Akwashiki was widely regarded as one of the most impactful leaders the district ever produced.
“In the history of Nasarawa North, Senator Akwashiki was the best senator the zone has ever produced because of his purposeful leadership,” the source said.

“His projects are spread across every part of the constituency, and he remains the only senator from the zone to win a second term.”
Before his election to the Nigerian Senate in 2019, Akwashiki served as Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he built a reputation for firm leadership and grassroots engagement.
Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon, Nasarawa State, Akwashiki was re-elected during the 2023 general elections, reinforcing his popularity among constituents.
His death has triggered an outpouring of grief across Nasarawa State, with political leaders, supporters, and residents paying tribute to his contributions to governance and development.
