Witnesses said the assailants forcefully stopped passing vehicles, ordered passengers to disembark, and later set two vehicles ablaze after abducting everyone on board.

As of Saturday, the whereabouts of the abducted passengers remained unknown, with no official confirmation on the number of victims taken.

A security monitoring platform, Bakatsine, confirmed the incident, describing it as another sign of the persistent insecurity plaguing Zamfara’s major roads.

“The attackers blocked the road, abducted all passengers, and burnt the vehicles before fleeing,” a security source told SaharaReporters.

The incident comes just days after security agencies declared the Gusau–Magami–Dansadau Road safe, following a deadly Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast on December 27 that killed at least eight people.

After the explosion, joint security teams including Police and Military Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units, as well as the Joint Task Force under Operation Fansa-Yamma, carried out an emergency sweep of the affected highway.

Despite these efforts, Friday’s attack underscores ongoing fears among residents and travellers about road safety and banditry in Zamfara State.
