  • NLC and TUC demand immediate halt of new tax laws over exclusion of workers’ input.

  • Law deemed regressive, placing heavier burden on low-income earners and minimum wage earners.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called on the Federal Government to immediately suspend the new tax laws, warning they could worsen hardship for workers and low-income Nigerians.

Speaking in Abuja during a tribute to former NLC President Hassan Summonu, NLC President Joe Ajaero described the tax reforms as regressive, noting that workers—who make up the bulk of taxpayers—were deliberately excluded from the presidential committee that drafted the policy.

Ajaero said the laws impose heavy taxes on those earning the minimum wage, adding that proceeding without addressing labour concerns could undermine public trust, democracy, and national stability.

He urged the government to review the law, engage labour unions meaningfully, and address workers’ wages ahead of the next statutory national minimum wage negotiations.

Ajaero emphasized that true democracy requires policies that serve the majority, not a few elites, and vowed that labour will continue to organise and challenge governance that disadvantages workers.
