Move aligns with counterterrorism efforts amid broader Nigeria–US security collaboration
The United States has delivered critical military supplies to Nigeria in a renewed push to strengthen security cooperation between both countries.
The delivery was confirmed on Tuesday by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), which oversees US military operations across the continent. According to AFRICOM, the supplies were officially handed over to Nigerian partners in Abuja.
In a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, AFRICOM stated that the support was aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s ongoing security operations, underscoring the shared commitment of both nations to regional stability and counterterrorism efforts.
“U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja. This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasizes our shared security partnership,” AFRICOM said.
While the command did not disclose the type or quantity of the military equipment delivered, the development comes against the backdrop of expanding defence collaboration between Abuja and Washington.
The latest delivery also follows recent US military actions in Nigeria. On Christmas night, US forces reportedly carried out airstrikes in Sokoto State targeting Islamic State–linked militants accused of collaborating with the Lakurawa jihadist group and local bandit networks.
Those operations occurred amid diplomatic tensions triggered by allegations of persecution and violence against Christians in Nigeria—claims described by former US President Donald Trump as “genocide,” but firmly rejected by the Nigerian government.
The military support signals continued engagement between Nigeria and the United States as both countries work to address security threats and promote stability in the region.
