Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has described Morocco as “scary” ahead of Nigeria’s crucial AFCON 2025 semi-final clash with the tournament hosts, admitting that the Atlas Lions’ recent performances have caught his attention as both teams battle for a place in the final.

Nigeria booked their place in the AFCON semi-final after a confident 2–0 victory over Algeria, but the challenge ahead is even tougher as they prepare to face Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

With a passionate home crowd expected to fill the stadium, the Atlas Lions stand as the final obstacle between the Super Eagles and a second straight appearance in the AFCON final.

Speaking on Alexander Yaa Digg’s YouTube channel, Iwobi admitted that Morocco left a strong impression on him after their dominant display against Cameroon.

“The night before our game against Algeria, I watched Morocco play Cameroon,” Iwobi said.

“Morocco looks good, looks scary. But we still hoped we would face them. We believe in ourselves.”

Despite acknowledging the threat posed by the hosts, the Fulham midfielder remained confident in Nigeria’s quality and mindset.

We have to believe, so we can achieve. Our team is good,” he added.

Morocco have been one of the standout teams of AFCON 2025, combining defensive discipline with quick, direct attacking play. Their squad is stacked with top European talent, including Achraf Hakimi, Noussair Mazraoui, Brahim Díaz, Youssef En-Nesyri, and Ayoub El Kaabi.

Nigeria, chasing a fourth AFCON title, have not lifted the trophy since 2013, while Morocco are desperate to end their long wait, having last won the competition in 1976.

For the Super Eagles, victory would not only silence the Rabat crowd but also confirm their return to the top tier of African football with back-to-back AFCON finals.

As the semi-final approaches, Iwobi’s words capture the mood in the Nigerian camp — respect for Morocco, belief in themselves, and readiness for the biggest test yet.
