  • Strike stems from delayed implementation of CONHESS and unresolved welfare issues for health workers.

  • Union calls for solidarity, pledging intensified monitoring, picketing, and media engagement to achieve demands.

The Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of Health Care Professionals (JOHESU) has reaffirmed its commitment to continue its indefinite national strike, rejecting the Federal Government’s “no work, no pay” policy.

In a memo signed by National Secretary Martin Egbanubi on Tuesday, the union addressed affiliate leaders, outlining the decision made during an emergency virtual meeting on January 12 to review the ongoing industrial action.

JOHESU explained that the strike arose from long-standing demands for the implementation of the adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) and other welfare-related matters.

The union also stated that it had followed all procedures under the Trade Disputes Act, describing the strike as a lawful dispute of rights rather than a violation of industrial relations laws.

Reacting to government directives for chief medical directors to enforce salary stoppages, JOHESU criticized the “no work, no pay” approach as a tool to pressure workers when labour disputes remain unresolved.

The union urged members to remain steadfast, promising intensified monitoring, picketing, and media engagement while exploring all avenues to secure their demands.
