Four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who had earlier stepped back from the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara have reversed their position and declared full support for the proceedings.

The lawmakers—Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo, Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency), Barile Nwakoh (Khana Constituency I), and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor Constituency II)—announced their decision on Friday during a live broadcast from the Assembly complex in Port Harcourt.

They had previously called for dialogue and political reconciliation to resolve the crisis between the legislature and the executive. However, Nwankwo said the governor and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, allegedly responded by allowing sustained media attacks on the Assembly rather than pursuing peace talks.

According to him, this development forced a rethink, leading to their decision to allow the impeachment proceedings to continue.

Nwakoh and Amadi also said they withdrew their earlier support for reconciliation after concluding that the governor and his deputy showed no genuine willingness to resolve the crisis through dialogue.

The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had commenced impeachment proceedings last week, accusing the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct, including the demolition of the Assembly complex and alleged expenditure of public funds without legislative approval.

Although the four lawmakers had temporarily withdrawn from the process earlier in the week, the Assembly on Friday insisted that impeachment remains constitutional and the only viable path to resolving the political impasse in the state.
