Uganda’s Electoral Commission has officially declared President Yoweri Museveni the winner of the 2026 presidential election, extending his decades-long grip on power after a fiercely contested poll overshadowed by an internet blackout and limits on civil society activities.
Announcing the results in Kampala, the commission’s chairperson, Simon Byabakama, said Museveni polled more than 7.9 million votes, the highest tally among all contestants in the election.

Byabakama explained that the president, who has been in office since 1986, met and surpassed the constitutional requirement by securing over 50 per cent of the total valid votes cast nationwide.
“Having obtained the highest number of votes in the election and the votes cast in his favour being more than 50 per cent of the total valid votes cast at the election, the Commission hereby declares Candidate Yoweri Museveni as the winner of the election,” he said.
Official figures released by the commission showed that about 11.4 million Ugandans participated in Thursday’s poll, translating to a voter turnout of 52.50 per cent of registered voters.
The election outcome has continued to draw attention locally and internationally, with observers closely watching post-election reactions and developments.
