Obasanjo spoke on Monday while hosting the leadership of the Paediatric Association of Nigeria (PAN) at his residence inside the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The delegation was led by PAN President, Dr. Ekanem Ekure.
According to the former president, although he no longer gives birth and his children are now adults, the family line continues through grandchildren and beyond.
“I am no longer giving birth to children, and my children are now adults. But my children are still having children, and my grandchildren are having children, so I will never stop having children,” Obasanjo said.
He further explained that the process of life never truly ends.
“Because when I stop, my children will not stop, and when my children stop, my grandchildren will not stop, and the cycle continues.”
Obasanjo emphasised that children remain the foundation of every society and warned that the future of any nation depends on how well its children are protected today. He called for stronger commitment to child survival, development, and healthcare.
The former president also praised pediatricians for their dedication, describing pediatrics as one of the most demanding areas of medicine due to the difficulty of treating children who cannot clearly express pain or discomfort.
“The problem of dealing with children is that they are not like adults. Children cannot always explain where it hurts or how they feel, so you must be able to feel for them,” he said.
Obasanjo pledged his full support for programs aimed at improving the lives of children in Nigeria and across the world. He also accepted PAN’s request to serve as an advocate for child health and wellness.
“The task you have given me as an advocate for children is one that I will easily accept,” he added.
Earlier, PAN President Dr. Ekanem Ekure described Obasanjo as a respected global statesman whose voice carries weight both within Nigeria and internationally. He said the association approached him because of growing challenges affecting child health in the country.
